A British novel published in 2004 by David Mitchell, Cloud Atlas is a complex narrative tapestry consisting of six interwoven stories spanning different time periods and genres. The story begins in the 19th century with the journal of American notary Adam Ewing, continues with a 1970s detective tale about journalist Luisa Rey, the chronicles of young composer Robert Frobisher in the 1930s, a farcical account of publisher Timothy Cavendish in the present day, a dystopian narrative of clone Sonmi-451 in a futuristic Korea, and culminates in a post-apocalyptic story of Zachry in a distant future. The novel then unfolds in reverse order, closing where it began. It explores themes of fate, reincarnation, power, oppression, and the cyclical nature of history, asking the question: can the actions of a single person shape the future?
