Crimson Desert

An open-world action-adventure made by the South Korean studio Pearl Abyss. The player leads the mercenary Kliff across the continent of Pywel — a fantasy land torn by war between several powers. His band, the Greymanes, is nearly wiped out by a strike from the rival Black Bears, the survivors are scattered across the world, and the whole story runs on Kliff gathering his people back together and reaching the leader of the attackers. Combat rests on strings of blows, magic and movement through the terrain: the hero fights on horseback, climbs cliffs and faces enormous opponents such as dragons. The world holds more than battles — there is fishing, cooking, hunting and the crafting of gear, and the allied camp grows to open new possibilities. Development took seven years: the idea began as a prequel to the online Black Desert Online and became a separate single-player game in its own universe along the way. The studio built the landscapes of Pywel by studying the architecture and nature of Sicily. The game runs on the studio's own engine, called BlackSpace. The release came on 19 March 2026 for Windows, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series. Reception was mostly good: reviewers praised the combat and the scale of the world, faulted the overload of mechanics and the sameness of the quests, and the average score from leading outlets came out near seventy-nine out of a hundred. Sales moved fast — two million copies on release day, five million within a month, more than six million in three.
