An action RPG in the hack-and-slash genre and a continuation of the legendary series, released in 2012. The story takes place 20 years after the events of Diablo II. The world of Sanctuary is once again under threat when a mysterious star falls from the heavens, signaling the return of an ancient evil. Players choose one of five (later expanded to seven) hero classes: Barbarian, Wizard, Demon Hunter, Monk, Witch Doctor (with Crusader and Necromancer added in expansions) and embark on a journey through four acts of the main campaign (later extended with a fifth act in the Reaper of Souls expansion). The game features fast-paced combat against hordes of demons, a loot system with countless legendary items, and procedurally generated environments. A major new feature was the auction house, where players could trade items for in-game currency and real money (later removed). Multiplayer via Battle.net allowed up to four players to team up. With the Reaper of Souls expansion, the game introduced Adventure Mode, Greater Rifts, and the endless Paragon progression system. Diablo III was a commercial success, selling millions of copies and leaving a significant impact on the genre.
