An American video game developed by Gearbox Software and published by Valve and Sierra Studios in 1999 for Windows as the first official expansion to the legendary first-person shooter Half-Life. In Opposing Force, the player assumes the role of Adrian Shephard, a corporal in the elite H.E.C.U. unit, deployed to the Black Mesa Research Facility to contain the aftermath of a disastrous experiment. However, the mission quickly turns into a desperate struggle for survival as Shephard and his team face not only alien creatures but also secret government forces determined to eliminate all witnesses. Unlike the original game, the expansion introduces new enemies, unique weapons, AI-controlled squadmates, and refined gameplay mechanics. The graphics and core mechanics remain faithful to Half-Life, but new elements add variety to the experience. Half-Life: Opposing Force received widespread critical acclaim, recognized as one of the best expansion packs in gaming history, and won the "Expansion Pack of the Year" award from the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences.
