An American thriller released in 2003, directed by James Mangold. The film follows ten strangers who find themselves stranded at a secluded Nevada motel during a heavy rainstorm. Among them are former police officer turned limousine driver Ed Dakota (John Cusack), convict Robert Maine (Jake Busey) under the escort of Officer Rhodes (Ray Liotta), television actress Caroline Suzanne (Rebecca De Mornay), newlyweds Lou (William Lee Scott) and Ginny (Clea DuVall), sex worker Paris (Amanda Peet), motel manager Larry (John Hawkes), and a family—George (John C. McGinley), his wife Alice (Leila Kenzle), and their son Timmy (Bret Loehr). As the plot unfolds, each becomes a victim of an unknown killer. Simultaneously, the story of serial killer Malcolm Rivers (Pruitt Taylor Vince), awaiting execution, is revealed; his journals indicate severe dissociative identity disorder. It becomes apparent that the events at the motel are occurring within Malcolm's mind, with the characters representing his multiple personalities. Psychiatrist Dr. Malick (Alfred Molina) attempts to integrate these identities to save Malcolm from execution. The film is noted for its intense plot and unexpected twists.
