An American crime drama television series created by Dick Wolf, "Law & Order" is one of the longest-running and most influential dramas in television history. Premiering in 1990, and continuing—with a hiatus—to the present day, the show is structured uniquely, with each episode split into two parts: the first half follows the New York City police detectives as they investigate a crime, typically a homicide, gathering evidence and interviewing witnesses; the second half focuses on the district attorneys as they prosecute the offenders in court.
