A 2013 American crime thriller set in North Braddock, Pennsylvania. Russell Baze (Christian Bale) is a steel mill worker who cares for his younger brother Rodney (Casey Affleck), an Iraq War veteran struggling to adjust to civilian life. Rodney becomes involved in underground bare-knuckle fighting, organized by bar owner John Petty (Willem Dafoe), to pay off his debts. After a fight arranged by the ruthless drug dealer Harlan DeGroat (Woody Harrelson), Rodney disappears. Frustrated by the inaction of the police, Russell takes justice into his own hands and embarks on a quest to find his brother, confronting the dangerous criminal underworld. The film explores themes of family bonds, revenge, and the moral dilemmas faced by individuals seeking justice. Director Scott Cooper creates a dark and tense atmosphere, depicting the decline of the working class in an industrial region. Despite its star-studded cast and strong performances, the film did not recoup its budget, grossing $15.7 million against a $22 million budget. Nevertheless, it received critical acclaim for its deep character development and realistic portrayal of the social environment.
