A Japanese video game developed by HAL Laboratory and Pax Softnica, and published by Nintendo in 1999 for the Nintendo 64, Pokémon Snap is a photography-based simulation game where players explore the world of Pokémon and capture their images. The player takes on the role of Todd Snap, a photographer traveling across Pokemon Island in a special vehicle called ZERO-ONE, documenting Pokémon in their natural habitats. The gameplay follows an on-rails shooter style, where the player's movement is automatic, focusing instead on taking photos and interacting with Pokémon using items such as bait, apples, and gas balls to trigger unique behaviors. After each trip, the photos are evaluated by Professor Oak, who scores them based on factors like composition, pose, and rarity. Despite featuring only 63 of the original 151 Pokémon, Pokémon Snap was praised for its unique gameplay, innovative concept, and detailed animations, becoming a cult classic among Pokémon fans. The game was later re-released on Virtual Console for Wii, Wii U, and Nintendo Switch, and in 2021, a sequel titled New Pokémon Snap was released for the Nintendo Switch.
