Is the practice of rhythmic spoken word performance, often rhymed and accompanied by music, encompassing reading written lyrics, writing original texts, improvisation (freestyle), battling, beat production, and developing a personal style. Rap emerged in African-American communities in New York during the 1970s as a core element of hip-hop culture, alongside graffiti, DJing, and breakdancing. Early rap milestones include recordings by Sugarhill Gang and Grandmaster Flash. This practice involves linguistic creativity, rhythmic control, diction, and tone, as well as a deep engagement with social and cultural narratives. Rap serves as a form of self-expression, storytelling, social critique, political commentary, or introspection. Key elements include flow technique (rhythmic movement of lyrics), lyrical substance, rhyme originality, and performer charisma. Freestyle rap is a distinct domain requiring real-time improvisation and verbal agility. Rap battles are performance contests emphasizing wit, rhetoric, and stage presence. Another important aspect is the creation of musical accompaniment—beats and instrumentals made with drum machines, samplers, and digital audio workstations. Iconic figures in rap include Tupac Shakur, The Notorious B.I.G., Nas, Eminem, Jay-Z, and Russian-speaking artists like Oxxxymiron, Basta, and Noize MC. Contemporary rap spans a wide range of genres—from underground to pop rap, political to humorous. The practice demands both individual effort and community involvement, as well as active interaction with audiences and current social discourse.
