A psychological thriller and the first novel in the Hannibal Lecter series, "Red Dragon" (1981) by American author Thomas Harris follows former FBI profiler Will Graham, who returns to duty to capture a serial killer known as "The Tooth Fairy." To do so, he seeks assistance from incarcerated psychiatrist and cannibal Hannibal Lecter, with whom he shares a complex history. The killer, Francis Dolarhyde, inspired by William Blake's painting "The Great Red Dragon and the Woman Clothed with the Sun," believes he is transforming into a supernatural being. He works at a photo lab, granting him access to his victims' home videos. Dolarhyde begins a relationship with blind co-worker Reba McClane, leading to internal conflict between his human side and the "dragon." To stop the murders, Graham orchestrates an interview insulting the killer, hoping to provoke contact. In response, Dolarhyde kidnaps journalist Freddy Lounds, brutally kills him, and sends the video to the newsroom. Later, he fakes his death by killing another man and attacks Graham at his home, severely injuring him before being shot by Graham's wife, Molly. The novel explores themes of evil, obsession, trauma, and the duality of human nature, combining a tense plot with deep psychological character analysis.
