The 2015 American psychological thriller directed by Fouad Mikati, written by Patricia Beauchamp and Joe Gossett, follows nurse Miranda Wells (Rosamund Pike) living in a small town, aspiring to become a surgical nurse. Her friend sets her up on a blind date with a man named Kevin, but on the day of the date, a different man arrives, whom she assumes is Kevin. He turns out to be William Finn (Shiloh Fernandez), who assaults and rapes her. The real Kevin arrives later, finds Miranda injured, and calls the police, leading to William's arrest. Following the attack, Miranda faces challenges: her house becomes unsellable, and a tremor in her hand prevents her from pursuing her surgical career. She begins writing letters to William in prison; despite initial resistance, he responds, and they develop a peculiar relationship, with Miranda visiting him regularly and engaging in flirtatious conversations. Upon his release, William visits her home, where she serves him lemonade laced with antifreeze, then restrains him in her basement. She confesses to poisoning him, as well as her father's dog, and allowing her mother to die. The film concludes with Miranda informing her father that William will not be coming around anymore.
