A 2004 historical romantic drama directed by Richard Eyre, with a screenplay by Jeffrey Hatcher based on his play "Compleat Female Stage Beauty", set in 17th-century London when women were prohibited from acting on stage, and all female roles were performed by men. The story follows Edward "Ned" Kynaston (Billy Crudup), one of the most renowned actors specializing in female roles, particularly Desdemona in "Othello". His dresser, Maria (Claire Danes), secretly aspiring to be an actress, defies the ban and performs as Desdemona, capturing the attention of King Charles II (Rupert Everett). Inspired by her performance, the king lifts the ban on women acting and prohibits men from playing female roles, leading to the downfall of Kynaston's career. As Maria rises to stardom, Kynaston struggles to adapt to the new theatrical landscape. Eventually, they collaborate to present a new interpretation of "Othello", with Kynaston as Othello and Maria as Desdemona, resulting in a triumphant return to the stage and revitalization of their careers.
