Michael Ritchie directed this American sports comedy of 1976, working from a script by Bill Lancaster. Its central figure is Morris Buttermaker (Walter Matthau) — an alcoholic who cleans pools for a living after a minor league baseball career. At the request of lawyer Bob Whitewood (Ben Piazza), Buttermaker agrees to coach the Bears, a team of misfit children rejected by other Little League teams in Southern California. Initially, the team suffers humiliating defeats, but the dynamics change when Buttermaker recruits his former student and stepdaughter Amanda Whurlitzer (Tatum O'Neal), a talented and confident pitcher, along with local troublemaker and skilled athlete Kelly Leak (Jackie Earle Haley). With their addition, the team starts to win games, but Buttermaker faces a moral quandary as he realizes that an overemphasis on winning could harm the children's well-being. In the championship game against the Yankees, whose coach Roy Turner (Vic Morrow) exhibits aggressive behavior, even striking his own son, Buttermaker chooses to play all his team members, including the weakest, emphasizing participation and team spirit over victory. The film was critically acclaimed for its honest and witty portrayal of youth sports, earning a BAFTA nomination for Best Actor (Walter Matthau), and the screenplay by Bill Lancaster received the Writers Guild of America Award.
