The 2013 American mystery thriller directed by James Oakley and written by Alex Michaelides delves into the intricate dynamics between a mother and daughter set against a backdrop of past secrets and present ambitions. The story centers on Kathryn Vale (Lena Olin), a former movie star who withdrew from the limelight following the unsolved murder of her husband, Max Pierce (Stephen Gevedon). Years later, Kathryn decides to make a comeback, despite her agent's warnings about potential public backlash. Her daughter, aspiring actress Zoe Hughes (Rosamund Pike), strives to establish her own career but faces constant criticism and rivalry from her mother. Tensions escalate when Kathryn begins receiving anonymous threats accusing her of murder. Zoe, suspecting her mother of attempting to overshadow her success, engages in a dangerous game, including seducing her stepfather, Jake Kelly (Dean Winters). The climax unfolds as Zoe fakes her own death to provoke Kathryn into killing Jake, whom she believes has betrayed her. However, Kathryn, recalling that she killed Max to protect Zoe from his abuse, refuses to commit another crime and turns Zoe over to the authorities. A year later, Kathryn resumes her acting career, leaving the past behind. The film also features performances by Molly Price (Edie Fontaine), Barbara Garrick (Joan Stone), and Jennifer Lawrence as young Zoe.
