The Good Shepherd

The 1955 British war novel by C. S. Forester focuses on naval warfare during World War II, specifically the challenges of the Battle of the Atlantic as experienced by the United States commander of an escort fleet over a 52-hour period. The protagonist, Commander George Krause, leads an escort group protecting a convoy of thirty-seven merchant ships from German U-boat attacks in the so-called "Mid-Atlantic gap," an area beyond the range of air cover. Although a seasoned officer in the U.S. Navy, this mission marks his first wartime command. He contends with technical issues related to early radar and sonar equipment, as well as communication difficulties with the Admiralty. The novel delves into Krause's internal struggles, his religious contemplations, fatigue, doubts, and dedication amidst constant threats. In 2020, the novel was adapted into the film "Greyhound," starring Tom Hanks.
