The Thirty-Nine Steps

A 1915 spy thriller by British author John Buchan, The Thirty-Nine Steps is considered one of the first and most influential novels of the genre. The protagonist, Richard Hannay, an ordinary civilian living in London, suddenly finds himself entangled in a complex international conspiracy. Just before the outbreak of World War I, he accidentally learns about a secret organization called "The Thirty-Nine Steps," which aims to undermine Britain's security. When the man who revealed the conspiracy to him is murdered, Hannay is forced to flee, pursued by both the police and enemy spies across Scotland. Relying on his wits and endurance, he must uncover the conspiracy before it’s too late. Packed with thrilling chases, intrigue, and hidden threats, the novel set the foundation for many later spy stories and has been adapted multiple times, including the famous film by Alfred Hitchcock.
