The 1993 American crime drama directed by Taylor Hackford is based on real events and the experiences of poet Jimmy Santiago Baca. The film follows three Chicano relatives from East Los Angeles: Miklo Velka (Damian Chapa), a half-Mexican striving to prove his cultural identity; Paco Aguilar (Benjamin Bratt), a hot-headed boxer who becomes a police officer after serving in the Marines; and Cruz Candelaria (Jesse Borrego), a talented artist whose life spirals downward after an injury leads to heroin addiction. Spanning from 1972 to 1984, the story depicts their diverging paths: Miklo ends up in San Quentin prison, where he joins the gang La Onda, rising through its ranks amidst racial conflicts and power struggles; Paco becomes a cop, facing moral dilemmas and the conflict between duty and family ties; Cruz, descending into drug addiction, loses his younger brother and seeks redemption through art. The film delves into themes of identity, loyalty, betrayal, and the consequences of choices made under pressure. Filmed in Los Angeles and San Quentin prison, it adds a layer of authenticity. Despite underperforming at the box office, the film has gained a cult following among the Latino community in the United States.
