Swing Kids

A 1993 historical drama directed by Thomas Carter. Set in 1939 Hamburg, Germany, the film follows a group of teenagers enamored with American and British swing music, defying the prohibitions of the Nazi regime. The protagonists, Peter Müller (Robert Sean Leonard) and Thomas Berger (Christian Bale), frequent underground clubs to enjoy jazz music and dancing. Their friend Arvid (Frank Whaley), a talented guitarist with a physical disability, remains devoted to music. The narrative intensifies when Peter is coerced into joining the Hitler Youth after being caught stealing a radio, while Thomas voluntarily joins, seeking the benefits of membership. As Nazi ideology increasingly infiltrates their lives, the friendship between Peter and Thomas faces severe challenges. Arvid, realizing the impossibility of continuing under such a regime, takes his own life. In the film's climax, Peter chooses to openly resist by attending a swing party, fully aware of the impending police raid. The film delves into themes of resistance, friendship, and moral choices under the oppressive weight of a totalitarian state.
