Arizona Dream

The 1993 French-American surrealist comedy-drama directed by Emir Kusturica follows Axel Blackmar (Johnny Depp), a young New Yorker working as a fish tagger who lives in a world of dreams. His cousin Paul (Vincent Gallo) persuades him to travel to Arizona for his uncle Leo's (Jerry Lewis) wedding to a much younger woman, Millie (Paulina Porizkova), which is actually a ploy to involve Axel in the family Cadillac dealership business. In Arizona, Axel meets the eccentric widow Elaine Stalker (Faye Dunaway), who dreams of flying, and her adopted daughter Grace (Lili Taylor), who is prone to depression and obsessed with suicide. Axel becomes entangled in complex relationships with both women, leading to emotional and psychological conflicts. The film is filled with surreal imagery, including flying fish and scenes where reality intertwines with imagination. The soundtrack is composed by Goran Bregović and Iggy Pop, featuring the song "In the Death Car". The 43rd Berlin International Film Festival gave "Arizona Dream" its Silver Bear – Special Jury Prize, and the film has since turned into a cult classic, prized for its strange atmosphere and its deep questions about the search for meaning and dreams.
