Dogma

This 1999 American fantasy comedy directed by Kevin Smith offers a satirical reimagining of religious dogma and Catholic belief. The plot centers on two fallen angels, Loki (Matt Damon) and Bartleby (Ben Affleck), who have been exiled from Heaven and condemned to eternal banishment in Wisconsin. They discover a loophole in Catholic dogma that would allow them to return to Heaven by passing through an archway in a New Jersey church. However, their return would negate the existence of the universe, as it would prove that God can make mistakes, contradicting the principle of His infallibility. To prevent this catastrophe, the heavenly messenger Metatron (Alan Rickman) enlists Bethany Sloane (Linda Fiorentino), an abortion clinic worker who is revealed to be the last living descendant of Jesus Christ. She is aided by two prophets — Jay (Jason Mewes) and Silent Bob (Kevin Smith) — as well as the 13th apostle Rufus (Chris Rock) and the muse Serendipity (Salma Hayek). Together, they confront the demon Azrael (Jason Lee) and his minions in a quest to stop the angels and save the world. The film is known for its provocative take on religious themes, including the parodic figure of "Buddy Christ," and sparked significant controversy and protests from religious groups. Despite this, it received positive reviews from critics and grossed $43.9 million against a $10 million budget, becoming the highest-grossing entry in Smith's "View Askewniverse."​
