A multiplayer version of the Dead or Alive fighting game, developed by Team Ninja in collaboration with the Chinese company Shanda Interactive Entertainment and released in 2008 exclusively for the Chinese market. Dead or Alive Online was based on the remake of Dead or Alive 2 but was adapted for online battles and distributed under a free-to-play model. The game featured many fighters from the classic entries of the series, including Kasumi, Ryu Hayabusa, Ayane, Helena, and others. The gameplay retained the signature combat system of the series, including dynamic combos, counters, and throws, while also introducing enhanced online functionality, allowing players to engage in ranked matches and tournaments. The project included character customization elements, which were rare for the franchise at the time. Despite its promising concept, the game faced technical issues and limited popularity outside of China, eventually leading to its shutdown a few years after launch.
