This is the practice of regulating and planning food intake to achieve specific physiological, medical, or aesthetic goals such as improving health, losing or gaining weight, maintaining physical fitness, managing chronic conditions, or adhering to ethical and cultural principles. Dieting as a conscious system of nutrition dates back to ancient times—physicians like Hippocrates and Galen in Ancient Greece and Rome emphasized the importance of food in maintaining health. In the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, nutrition was viewed through the lens of humoral balance and often followed medical guidance. In the 19th and 20th centuries, with the development of nutritional science, dieting became more structured and scientifically grounded, giving rise to early popular diet systems such as William Banting’s low-carb regimen or the Atkins diet. Today, dieting takes many forms—from short-term programs (e.g., ketogenic diet, intermittent fasting, low-carb diets) to lifelong nutritional strategies (e.g., vegetarianism, veganism, Mediterranean diet). It is also used for managing chronic health conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, celiac disease, and digestive disorders. Modern dietetics focuses on balanced nutrition, individualized needs, evidence-based approaches, and mental well-being. Dieting can function as a standalone practice or be part of a broader self-regulation system that includes exercise, therapy, and lifestyle adjustments. Aesthetic motivations, social pressures, and media representations also influence approaches to dieting, making it both a tool for self-care and a potential source of disordered eating if not approached mindfully and responsibly.
