A physical wellness practice involving walking with special poles resembling ski poles, developed in Finland in 1997 by sports educator Marko Kantaneva as a summer training method for cross-country skiers adapted for the general public. Nordic walking combines regular walking with active upper body engagement through pole use, resulting in a balanced workout that targets all major muscle groups. Initially part of professional athlete training programs, the method soon spread to the domains of fitness, rehabilitation, and healthy aging. During the 2000s, it gained international popularity, especially in Germany, Austria, and Eastern Europe, where mass events, training programs, and instructor certifications became common. Nordic walking is effective for improving endurance, posture, coordination, and joint protection, as well as for preventing cardiovascular diseases. It is recommended for individuals of all ages and fitness levels, including seniors and those recovering from injuries. Thanks to its accessibility, low impact, and suitability for outdoor activity, the practice has secured a stable position among modern forms of wellness-focused physical activity.
