A physical and sporting practice of moving using a bicycle, which originated in the early 19th century with the invention of the prototype "dandy horse" by German inventor Karl von Drais in 1817. Initially conceived as an alternative to horse travel, this technology quickly evolved: pedals were added in the 1860s, and in 1885 the modern "safety" bicycle with chain transmission was introduced. Cycling developed alongside bicycle innovations and became part of international sports — in 1896, cycling was included in the first modern Olympic Games. There are many disciplines in cycling: road racing, track cycling, mountain biking, BMX, cyclocross, and touring. The practice of cycling is used for competitive, wellness, and transportation purposes. It improves endurance, cardiovascular health, coordination, and leg strength while reducing stress and boosting overall vitality. Cycling has become a part of urban culture, ecological initiatives, and recreational activities, especially in countries with developed cycling infrastructure like the Netherlands, Denmark, and Germany. It is also used in rehabilitation and fitness programs, and cycling tourism has grown into a popular form of active travel. With its global reach, cultural presence, and athletic value, cycling has become one of the most recognizable and universal modern practices.
