This is the practice of ascending mountain peaks, combining elements of physical endurance, technical skill, strategic planning, and psychological resilience. As a distinct practice, mountaineering began to take shape in the late 18th century, when in 1786 French physician Michel-Gabriel Paccard and mountain guide Jacques Balmat made the first successful ascent of Mont Blanc, the highest point in Western Europe. This event is widely regarded as the birth of mountaineering as both a cultural and athletic pursuit. In the 19th century, it gained popularity among European elites, particularly in the Alps, where the first climbing clubs and associations were formed, such as the Alpine Club in Britain in 1857. By the 20th century, mountaineering had become a global endeavor, with expeditions reaching the Himalayas, Andes, Caucasus, Alaska, and beyond, transforming climbing into an act of spiritual challenge, self-overcoming, and communion with nature. Mountaineering includes several branches: traditional high-altitude, technical (rock and ice climbing), sport climbing, expeditionary climbing, and extreme mountaineering. It demands rigorous physical training, knowledge of safety techniques and rescue methods, and the ability to navigate harsh wilderness and extreme climates. The practice is deeply linked with themes of risk and transcendence and has influenced literature, philosophy, cinema, and photography. Key milestones include the first ascent of Everest by Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay in 1953, record-setting solo climbs, winter expeditions, and pioneering ascents on previously inaccessible routes.
