Ecotourism

A form of sustainable tourism focused on responsible travel to natural areas for the purpose of learning about, enjoying, and contributing to environmental conservation, first conceptually defined by Mexican ecologist Héctor Ceballos-Lascuráin in 1983. Ecotourism emphasizes minimal environmental impact, respect for the cultural integrity of local communities, and support for biodiversity preservation. This practice integrates travel, education, conservation, and community involvement, aiming to raise ecological awareness and promote sustainable development. It flourishes in nature reserves, national parks, mountain and tropical regions, coral reefs, and other sensitive ecosystems, including hiking, wildlife observation, participation in ecological projects, and environmental volunteering. Ecotourism emerged as a response to the harmful effects of mass tourism and gained international recognition in the 1990s when global organizations began establishing standards and principles for sustainable tourism. It also plays a key role in shaping environmental consciousness, preserving cultural heritage, and involving tourists in both social and conservation initiatives.
