This is the practice of temporary outdoor living using tents, campers, or other portable shelters, developed as a form of active recreation and reconnection with nature amid a growing interest in tourism and autonomous travel in the 19th century. One of the founders of modern camping was Englishman Thomas Hiram Holding, who in 1861 journeyed with his parents across the American prairies and later published "The Camper’s Handbook" in 1908, outlining the philosophy and methods of camping as an independent form of leisure. The practice quickly gained popularity in Britain, France, and Germany, and later expanded globally, especially with the rise of railway and automobile travel. In the 20th century, camping became a widespread activity: camping clubs, designated sites, rest areas, and infrastructures for families, youth, and extreme travelers were developed. Camping can be wild (autonomous) or organized (with facilities), and may involve tents, RVs, trailers, canopies, and portable saunas. It requires planning skills, gear management, navigation, and basic survival knowledge. Camping strengthens human connection to nature, promotes minimalism, mindfulness, and sustainable use of resources. It is widely used in educational, therapeutic, and environmental programs, and is a popular form of family and group recreation. Camping has become a part of popular culture, appearing in films, literature, advertising, and the urban nostalgia for simpler ways of life.
