An agricultural practice of breeding, keeping, and caring for domesticated animals aimed at producing food, raw materials, and other resources, originating in ancient times during the Neolithic era, around 10,000 years ago, when humans began to domesticate wild animals in the Fertile Crescent. This practice became a key part of the transition from hunting and gathering to sedentary life and agrarian economy. Animal husbandry includes the breeding of various livestock species — cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, horses — as well as poultry and fish, and spans many branches: dairy farming, meat production, poultry farming, sheep and goat breeding, pig farming, horse breeding, beekeeping, and aquaculture. It requires expertise in feeding, breeding, veterinary care, ecology, and genetics. Over time, animal husbandry became not only a source of products (milk, meat, eggs, wool, leather) but also an important element of agricultural economy, culture, traditions, and cuisine. Modern technologies, including automation, selective breeding, and biotechnology, help increase productivity and sustainability, while also raising ethical and environmental debates. Today, animal husbandry plays a key role in food security, sustainable rural development, and the global agro-industry.
