This is the practice of human interaction with domesticated animals, encompassing care, feeding, training, housing, and emotional bonding with them, and includes a wide variety of species—from traditional cats and dogs to fish, birds, rodents, reptiles, and exotic animals. Historically, pet keeping began with the domestication of wolves around 15–20 thousand years ago, giving rise to dogs, which were initially used for hunting and guarding. Cats were domesticated later, approximately 9 thousand years ago in the Middle East, and gained popularity as companions due to their ability to control rodent populations. Over time, the role of animals shifted from utilitarian to emotional and decorative: in many cultures, animals became perceived as family members. In the modern world, pet keeping is a cultural, social, and economic practice, involving specialized food, veterinary services, accessories, breeding, training, competitions, exhibitions, and animal-assisted therapy. It is often used to combat loneliness, anxiety, depression, and social isolation, particularly among the elderly and children. There are also extreme forms of the practice, including irresponsible breeding, trendy keeping of exotic species, or excessive anthropomorphism of animals. Nevertheless, pet keeping is widely recognized across cultures as a way to foster empathy, responsibility, and strong emotional bonds. The practice has also inspired entire branches of art, literature, cinema, and media dedicated to the life with animals and their human perception.
