This is the practice of consciously abstaining from sexual activity, including intercourse and masturbation, which can be either temporary or permanent and is undertaken by both men and women for a variety of reasons—religious, spiritual, ethical, cultural, medical, or personal. Historically, abstinence has held significant importance in religious traditions such as Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, and Hinduism, where it is viewed as a path to spiritual purification, self-discipline, and focus on higher purposes. For example, monastic orders in Catholicism practice celibacy as a form of complete sexual abstinence, while in Hinduism, brahmacharya is considered a vital stage of spiritual development. Many cultures have also observed periods or rites of abstinence related to initiation, purification, or preparation for rituals. In contemporary secular contexts, abstinence can be a personal choice motivated by values, the desire to focus on other life areas, overcoming addiction, or recovering from traumatic sexual experiences. The practice is also prominently discussed in online communities such as NoFap, whose participants advocate for abstaining from masturbation and pornography as a means of improving mental clarity, energy, self-confidence, and focus. While many of the claims made by such movements lack strong scientific consensus, the phenomenon of abstinence has become a notable aspect of modern self-development culture and digital asceticism. The experience of abstinence can come with challenges such as frustration and tension but also with a sense of control, inner strength, and a reorientation of priorities. Depending on its motivation and duration, abstinence may be viewed as a form of discipline, protest, religious devotion, or personal experimentation.
