This is a voluntary medical practice where individuals donate blood for subsequent use in medical purposes, such as transfusions, pharmaceutical production, or research. The history of blood donation dates back to the 17th century when, in 1667, French physician Jean-Baptiste Denys performed the first recorded transfusion from an animal to a human. Significant advancements occurred in the early 20th century with Austrian physician Karl Landsteiner's discovery in 1901 of blood groups A, B, and O, enabling safe transfusions between compatible donors and recipients. In 1921, Percy Lane Oliver in London established the first voluntary blood donation service, where donors gave blood without compensation, laying the foundation for modern donation systems. In 1930, Soviet surgeon Sergei Yudin successfully utilized blood from recently deceased donors and organized the world's first blood transfusion station. In 1937, Dr. Bernard Fantus in the United States founded the first "blood bank" in Chicago, and American physician Charles Drew developed methods for blood storage and transportation, playing a crucial role during World War II. Blood donation encompasses various forms, including whole blood, plasma, platelets, and other components. Modern technologies allow for efficient testing and storage of blood, ensuring safety and availability for patients. Blood donation is a vital part of healthcare systems, contributing to saving millions of lives annually.
