In the 19th century, France saw the rise of "window shopping," where people would look at goods without the intention to buy, becoming a form of leisure and social activity. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, department stores like Macy's and Bloomingdale's appeared, offering a wide range of products under one roof and introducing innovations such as fixed pricing and display windows. In 1916, the first supermarket, Piggly Wiggly, opened in the USA, introducing the self-service model that revolutionized the shopping process. After World War II, supermarkets spread worldwide, offering convenience and low prices. With technological advancements in the late 20th and early 21st centuries, shopping moved into the online space, with the emergence of e-commerce platforms and online stores.
