An American buddy cop comedy film released in 1987, marking the directorial debut of Tom Mankiewicz, based on the radio and television crime drama of the same name. The story follows Los Angeles Police Department Sergeant Joe Friday (Dan Aykroyd), the nephew of the original character, who is assigned a new partner, the brash and easygoing Detective Pep Streebek (Tom Hanks). Their contrasting investigative styles initially clash but soon converge as they delve into a series of bizarre crimes, including the theft of a pornographic magazine's entire print run and the activities of a cult known as P.A.G.A.N. (People Against Goodness and Normalcy), led by the charismatic yet dangerous Reverend Jonathan Whirley (Christopher Plummer). During their investigation, they rescue Connie Swail (Alexandra Paul), intended as a sacrificial victim, and uncover corruption at the highest levels of authority, including Police Commissioner Jane Kirkpatrick (Elizabeth Ashley). Captain Bill Gannon (Harry Morgan), the former partner of the original Friday, now serves as their superior and plays a pivotal role in the unfolding events. The film blends satire with homage, parodying police procedural clichés while paying respect to the original material. With a budget of $20 million, the film grossed $66.7 million worldwide, receiving mixed critical reviews but achieving commercial success.
