Educating Rita

Lewis Gilbert directed this 1983 British comedy-drama; Willy Russell adapted the screenplay from his own 1980 stage play. At its center is Susan (Julie Walters), a 26-year-old Liverpool hairdresser who would rather be called Rita. Dissatisfied with her routine life and seeking self-improvement, she enrolls in a literature course at the Open University. Her tutor is Dr. Frank Bryant (Michael Caine), a disillusioned professor battling alcoholism and a lack of enthusiasm for teaching.
