Every Time We Say Goodbye

An American drama film from 1986, directed by Moshé Mizrahi, tells the story of a romance between American pilot David Bradley (Tom Hanks), serving in the Royal Air Force, and young Sephardic Jewish woman Sarah Perrara (Cristina Marsillach) in British Mandate-era Jerusalem. After being wounded in North Africa, David recuperates in Jerusalem, where he meets Sarah through her cousin Victoria (Anat Atzmon) and her fiancé Peter (Benedict Taylor). Despite their mutual attraction, their relationship faces obstacles due to religious and cultural differences: David is a Protestant and the son of a minister, while Sarah's family strictly adheres to traditions, requiring marriages within the Jewish community. Complicating matters is Sarah's cousin Nessim (Moni Moshonov), who has long been in love with her and hopes to marry her. The film explores themes of intercultural love, family obligations, and personal sacrifice against the backdrop of World War II. A notable feature of the film is the use of the Ladino language, highlighting the cultural heritage of Sephardic Jews. Filming took place in Israel, including the King David Hotel in Jerusalem. Despite Tom Hanks' involvement, the film was not commercially successful, grossing only $278,623 against a budget of $3.7 million, and received mixed reviews from critics.
