The 1993 American historical Western film, directed by Walter Hill and written by John Milius and Larry Gross, portrays the final chapter of the Apache Wars and the surrender of the legendary Apache leader Geronimo in 1886. The story centers on First Lieutenant Charles B. Gatewood (Jason Patric), who is tasked with persuading Geronimo (Wes Studi) to surrender to U.S. authorities. Accompanied by young Second Lieutenant Britton Davis (Matt Damon) and seasoned scout Al Sieber (Robert Duvall), Gatewood embarks on a perilous journey through the southwestern territories, confronting betrayal, violence, and cultural conflicts. The film delves into the complex relationships between the U.S. Army and Native American tribes, raising questions of honor, duty, and morality. General George Crook (Gene Hackman) is depicted as a man seeking a peaceful resolution but facing political pressure and misunderstanding. Ry Cooder's musical score enhances the film's atmosphere of tension and tragedy. Despite high production values and a star-studded cast, the film did not achieve commercial success, grossing approximately $18.6 million against a $35 million budget. It was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Sound and received the Western Heritage Award for Theatrical Motion Picture.
