An American romantic comedy-drama released in 1986, directed by Mike Nichols and written by Nora Ephron, based on her semi-autobiographical novel of the same name, which details her marriage to journalist Carl Bernstein. The film follows Rachel Samstat (Meryl Streep), a successful New York food writer who meets charismatic Washington political journalist Mark Forman (Jack Nicholson) at a wedding. Their whirlwind romance leads to marriage and a move to Washington, D.C., where they begin a life filled with domestic challenges and emotional trials. Rachel becomes pregnant, and the couple awaits the birth of their daughter, but she soon discovers Mark's infidelity with a mutual acquaintance. Rachel returns to New York, grappling with betrayal and attempting to rebuild her life. Despite attempts at reconciliation, she faces further deceit and ultimately decides to end the relationship, taking her children and leaving for New York. The film is noted for its witty screenplay that blends humor with deep emotion, as well as outstanding performances by Meryl Streep and Jack Nicholson. The cast also includes Jeff Daniels, Stockard Channing, Catherine O'Hara, Kevin Spacey (in his film debut), and Natasha Lyonne.
