This 1990 American erotic drama directed by Philip Kaufman is based on the explicit diaries of writer Anaïs Nin (Maria de Medeiros), chronicling her intense and complicated relationships with American author Henry Miller (Fred Ward) and his wife June (Uma Thurman) in Paris in 1931. Anaïs, married to banker Hugh Guiler (Richard E. Grant), seeks creative inspiration and personal awakening, and becomes entangled in a passionate affair with Henry, whose rebellious literary spirit captivates her. However, her encounter with June — a vulnerable yet magnetic woman — leads to an emotionally and physically charged connection that challenges Anaïs’s identity and desires. The trio’s relationships form a complex triangle filled with passion, jealousy, artistic freedom, and self-exploration. Notable for being the first film in U.S. history to receive the NC-17 rating, the film presents its provocative themes with a refined, artistic tone and explores the boundaries of love and creativity.
