An Australian television soap opera that began in 1988, created by Alan Bateman, it chronicles the lives and relationships of the residents of the fictional coastal town of Summer Bay in New South Wales. The narrative initially centers on the Fletcher family: Tom (Roger Oakley) and Pippa (Vanessa Downing), who move from the city and foster five children—Frank Morgan (Alex Papps), Carly Morris (Sharyn Hodgson), Lynn Davenport (Helena Bozich), Steven Matheson (Adam Willits), and Sally Fletcher (Kate Ritchie). They take over the management of the local caravan park and soon welcome a sixth foster child, Bobby Simpson (Nicolle Dickson). The series explores various social and personal issues, including teenage pregnancy, drug and alcohol addiction, sexual assault, and attempted suicide, which have sparked public debate. Over time, new characters are introduced, such as local resident Alf Stewart (Ray Meagher), his daughter Roo (Justine Clarke), and sister Morag Bellingham (Cornelia Frances), as well as other Summer Bay inhabitants like Donald Fisher (Norman Coburn), Ailsa Hogan (Judy Nunn), Martin Dibble (Craig Thomson), and Lance Smart (Peter Vroom). Exterior scenes are filmed in Palm Beach, a suburb of Sydney, while interior scenes are shot at the Australian Technology Park in Redfern. The show has become one of Australia's longest-running and most successful television productions, receiving numerous awards, including 49 Logie Awards, and has been sold to over 80 countries worldwide.
