A 2004 historical drama based on true events, depicting the 1994 Rwandan genocide, during which the Hutu ethnic group orchestrated the mass extermination of the Tutsi people. The film follows Paul Rusesabagina (Don Cheadle), the manager of Des Mille Collines hotel in Kigali. As violence erupts, he uses his position and connections to shelter over a thousand refugees within the hotel’s walls, saving them from almost certain death. Despite immense pressure from armed militias, Paul displays extraordinary courage and humanity. The film sheds light on the horrors of war, the inaction of the international community, and the power of one man’s resistance against brutality. Hotel Rwanda received critical acclaim and was nominated for three Academy Awards, including Best Actor for Don Cheadle.
