Amistad

The 1997 American historical drama directed by Steven Spielberg is based on the true events of 1839, when a group of Mende Africans, captured for slavery and aboard the Spanish ship La Amistad, revolted and took control of the vessel. After seizing the ship off the coast of Cuba, they were intercepted by an American ship and brought to the United States, where a high-profile legal battle ensued to determine their status—slaves or free individuals. The central figure, Cinqué (Djimon Hounsou), becomes a symbol of the struggle for freedom, and his case garners national attention.
