Our God's Brother

A 1997 biographical drama directed and written by Krzysztof Zanussi, based on the play of the same name by Karol Wojtyła, who later became Pope John Paul II, tells the story of Polish painter and monk Albert Chmielowski. The film begins with a theatrical performance where the actor portraying Chmielowski reflects on his character, gradually transitioning the action to 19th-century Kraków. Albert Chmielowski (Scott Wilson) was a talented painter who participated in the Polish uprising but, after being wounded and losing a leg, experienced a spiritual crisis. He renounced secular life and dedicated himself to helping the poor and homeless, founding the Catholic congregations of the Albertine Brothers and Sisters. The film portrays his internal struggle between art and serving people, his encounters with various characters including Max (Christoph Waltz), a stranger (Wojciech Pszoniak), Mrs. Helena (Grażyna Szapołowska), and others. The narrative emphasizes the importance of compassion, self-sacrifice, and spiritual quest. The film was awarded the Jury Prize for Best Screenplay at the Tehran International Film Festival.
