A role-playing video game in the fantasy genre, developed by Black Isle Studios and released in 2002. It is a sequel to Icewind Dale, set in the Forgotten Realms universe based on the Dungeons & Dragons tabletop system. Unlike its predecessor, the game uses the Dungeons & Dragons 3rd Edition ruleset, introducing significant changes to gameplay mechanics, including skills, classes, and multiclassing. The story takes place thirty years after the events of the first game, following an invasion of goblins, orcs, and giants into the northern lands. The player controls a party of six adventurers tasked with stopping the invasion. Icewind Dale II focuses heavily on combat and tactical encounters, offering fewer role-playing elements than the Baldur's Gate series. Despite this, it received positive reviews for its challenging battles, atmosphere, and detailed environments, though it was criticized for its weaker narrative and repetitive quests. It was the last game released by Black Isle Studios before the company was shut down.
