A 2004 Irish comedy-drama film directed by Damien O'Donnell, based on a screenplay by Jeffrey Caine, tells the story of two young men with disabilities striving for physical and emotional independence, defying the "protective" nature of institutional living and societal prejudices. Michael (Steven Robertson), a 24-year-old man with cerebral palsy, has been a long-term resident of the Carrigmore Residential Home for the Disabled. His routine life changes with the arrival of Rory (James McAvoy), who suffers from Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Rory, despite his physical limitations, possesses a lively character and sharp mind, enabling him to understand Michael's speech, which is barely intelligible to others. Together, they decide to venture beyond the home's walls to experience life outside, leading to numerous amusing and touching situations. The film addresses themes of friendship, the quest for independence, and the challenge of combating societal stereotypes.
