Clint Eastwood directed this 2009 American biographical sports drama, working from Anthony Peckham's screenplay, which adapts "Playing the Enemy: Nelson Mandela and the Game That Made a Nation," a book by John Carlin. Apartheid has just ended in South Africa, Nelson Mandela (Morgan Freeman) has been elected president, and the story picks up there. Seeking to unite a divided nation, Mandela uses the 1995 Rugby World Cup, hosted in South Africa, as a means to achieve this goal. He approaches the national team's captain, Francois Pienaar (Matt Damon), urging him to inspire the team to victory despite skepticism and internal divisions. The film details how sport becomes a tool for national unity, overcoming racial prejudices, and building a new national identity. The cast also includes Tony Kgoroge, Patrick Mofokeng, Julian Lewis Jones, Adjoa Andoh, and Marguerite Wheatley. With a budget of $50–60 million, the film grossed over $122 million worldwide and received positive reviews from critics, particularly for the performances of Freeman and Damon, who were nominated for Academy Awards for Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor, respectively.
