This 1967 American romantic comedy film, directed by Clive Donner, is based on the play by Murray Schisgal. The story follows Harry Berlin (Jack Lemmon), a despondent and unsuccessful man who attempts suicide by jumping off the Manhattan Bridge. At the last moment, he's stopped by his old friend Milt Manville (Peter Falk), a successful stockbroker facing marital issues with his wife Ellen (Elaine May). Milt persuades Harry to stay with Ellen, hoping they will fall in love, leading Ellen to agree to a divorce so Milt can be with his young lover Linda (Nina Wayne). Initially, the plan works: Harry and Ellen fall in love and marry, while Milt marries Linda. However, both soon realize their new relationships are unfulfilling. Ellen becomes disillusioned with Harry's childish and odd behavior, and Milt faces financial difficulties and Linda's dissatisfaction. They decide to reunite and attempt to convince Harry to divorce Ellen. When Harry refuses, Milt and Ellen try to recreate the bridge scenario to prompt Harry's suicide. The plan backfires, resulting in all three ending up in the water. The film explores themes of love, marriage, and human frailty with elements of farce and satire. Harrison Ford appears in a minor role in the film.
