The 2005 American romantic comedy directed by Lasse Hallström offers a loose adaptation of Giacomo Casanova's life. The story follows the young Casanova (Heath Ledger), renowned for his numerous romantic escapades in 18th-century Venice. After a scandal with the Church, he faces exile unless he marries. To avoid this, he becomes engaged to Victoria, famed for her virtue. However, he soon meets Francesca Bruni (Sienna Miller), an intelligent and independent woman who writes feminist tracts under a male pseudonym and advocates for women's rights. Francesca despises Casanova for his reputation, prompting him to conceal his true identity to win her affection. As events unfold, Casanova becomes entangled in a series of misunderstandings, including impersonating Francesca's suitor, Paprizzio (Oliver Platt), and facing charges of heresy and debauchery from the Inquisition. In the film's climax, Casanova and Francesca are sentenced to execution but are saved at the last moment through the intervention of their family. The film blends elements of farce, romance, and historical drama, exploring themes of love, identity, and personal freedom.
