Marty Supreme

A 2025 comedy-drama directed by Josh Safdie, who wrote the screenplay with Ronald Bronstein. At its centre is a young and ambitious table tennis player of the mid-twentieth century, chasing recognition in a pursuit nobody around him takes seriously. The model for the hero is named outright: Marty Reisman, the American table tennis player and writer who lived from 1930 to 2012. Hence the double register of the picture, which plays the hero's sporting stubbornness straight and the world around him for comedy. Timothée Chalamet takes the leading part and is also one of the producers. The cast includes Gwyneth Paltrow, Odessa A'zion, Fran Drescher, Sandra Bernhard and Penn Jillette. They are joined by people from adjacent trades: the musician Tyler, The Creator, the filmmaker Abel Ferrara and the high-wire artist Philippe Petit, since the director has long mixed trained actors with non-professional performers. This is the first feature Josh Safdie has made without his brother Benny, with whom he made Good Time and Uncut Gems; the old circle of collaborators nevertheless holds, as the script was written with Ronald Bronstein again and the score, as on Uncut Gems, is by Oneohtrix Point Never. Eli Bush and Anthony Katagas produced alongside Chalamet. The film opened in the United States on 25 December 2025 and reached other territories on 22 January and on 5 and 6 February 2026. Reception was enthusiastic: reviewers praised Timothée Chalamet and the direction with near unanimity. At the box office it became the highest-grossing release in the history of the A24 studio.
