Emancipation

The 2022 American historical thriller directed by Antoine Fuqua, written by William N. Collage, is based on true events and inspired by the 1863 photograph of a former slave named Peter, whose heavily scarred back became a powerful symbol of the cruelty of slavery and galvanized the abolitionist movement. The film follows Peter (Will Smith), an enslaved man on a Louisiana plantation, who decides to escape after President Abraham Lincoln issues the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863. Determined to reunite with his family and gain freedom, Peter embarks on a perilous journey through treacherous swamps, pursued by the ruthless slave hunter Fassel (Ben Foster) and his team. Peter joins the Union Army, participates in battles, and aids in liberating other plantations, all while striving to reunite with his wife Dodienne (Charmaine Bingwa) and their children.
