Valkyrie

This 2008 historical thriller directed by Bryan Singer recounts the real-life plot to assassinate Adolf Hitler during the final phase of World War II. The central figure is Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg (Tom Cruise), a loyal Wehrmacht officer who, disillusioned with the Nazi regime and its catastrophic direction, becomes convinced that Hitler must be stopped for the sake of Germany’s future. Severely wounded in Africa—losing an eye, a hand, and fingers—Stauffenberg joins a group of high-ranking conspirators who seek to kill Hitler and seize control of the government using an existing emergency continuity plan known as "Operation Valkyrie." Originally designed to stabilize the regime in case of internal unrest, the plan is repurposed by the conspirators for a coup. With his new position close to Hitler, Stauffenberg takes on the critical task of planting the bomb himself. The film meticulously follows the buildup to the assassination attempt, the internal conflicts among the conspirators, their moral resolve, and the harrowing consequences of their actions. Alongside Cruise, the film stars Kenneth Branagh (General Tresckow), Bill Nighy (General Olbricht), Tom Wilkinson (General Fromm), and Terence Stamp (Ludwig Beck). “Valkyrie” is a tense, somber, and stylish portrayal of courage, conviction, and tragedy, shedding cinematic light on one of the most significant internal resistance movements against the Third Reich.
